California PBL’s Virtual State Business Leadership Conference is an opportunity to maximize member participation in our competitive events program. Now that we are doing the conference virtually, there will need to be some adjustments to the Competitive Events.
Note: FOR ALL PERFORMANCE EVENTS - Please submit additional materials via the form below. We will be utilizing this as the avenue for all event submission for this years conference.
Overview of Events
Skill Events (online test and proctored production). Because of the complexities that would be required to arrange for proctored sessions, these events will be restricted to the members who have already completed and submitted their entries. No new entries will be accepted in these events.
Knowledge Events (online test only). The majority of members have already completed these events and their scores will be carried forward for the Virtual SBLC. Individuals who did not complete their events will have another opportunity to do so as part of the Virtual SBLC. Individuals who now wish to participate will be able to register for up to six (6) events.
Performance Events (judged). Members who pre-registered for these events will be carried forward to the Virtual SBLC. Members who are registering newly for the Virtual SBLC will be able to select up to two (2) Performance events. These events will be conducted using the following procedures.
Business Decision Making, Financial Analysis & Decision Making, Help Desk, Hospitality Management, Human Resource Management, Impromptu Speaking, Management Analysis & Decision Making, Marketing Analysis & Decision Making. Individuals or Teams registered for these events will receive the event prompt via email on Monday, April 6. Teams will need to video record their presentation, with the URL for the video submitted for judging by Friday, April 10. Teams that have not yet completed the online knowledge test portion of these events will also receive a password to complete this portion of the event during this same week.
Business Ethics, Business Presentation, Public Speaking, Sales Presentation. The prompt for these events are published in the California Awards Program guidelines. Presentations will be video recorded, with the URL for the video submitted for judging, by Friday, April 10.
Client Services, Future Business Executive. These events will require a live, interactive session between the member and judges. These sessions will be scheduled between April 7 and April 10. Participants will be sent an email on April 6 with a link to scheduling form. Once the scheduling is completed, members will be sent a second email with directions for logging into their actual session with the judges.
Competitive Event FAQ
Who can compete in the Virtual State Business Leadership Conference?
Any member who was registered for the live SBLC is still registered for the Virtual SBLC. In addition, any member who was not able to register for the original conference may not join us for the Virtual SBLC.
Can members compete in additional events or change events?
Members who were registered for the original SBLC are still registered in the events they had selected. If they were unable to complete an Objective Knowledge test, they will have an additional chance to do so.
Members who are registering new for the Virtual SBLC may select up to six (6) Objective Knowledge test and/or two (2) Performance Events.
Can we change the make-up of competitive event teams?
Existing teams should continue with their original team members. If a team member cannot continue, the remaining member(s) of the team can continue. New members cannot be added to existing teams since they will not have completed the first part of the event as part of that team.
Can members do multiple takes of their presentation before uploading the “best” version?
Yes, members may practice and redo their presentation videos as many times as they need to be satisfied that they are submitting their best effort.
The event guidelines talk about timed preparation slots immediately before the presentation. How will that apply for the Virtual SBLC?
All prompts that would normally be shared in the “prep room” at conference will be distributed to competitors on Monday, April 6. Everyone will get the prompt at the same time and will have the same amount of time to prepare, practice, and produce their entry. We will not be monitoring or attempting to restrict preparation times to the limits specified in the published guidelines.
